I kind of feel sorry (not) for Polish broadcaster TVP and polish right-wing government because every year they fall into the same LGBT+ trap and they cannot really do anything about it. Year after year it’s more unexpected and they cannot censor it lmfaoooo

The Turkish government asked Twitter to censor its political opponents right before an election, and Elon “free speech” Musk complied.

Make no mistake: Elon Musk will use Twitter to manipulate the US. elections in 2024.

so WHAT is croatia doing on esc???

aristotels:

ok i see lots of people not understanding the song so lemme explain!

1) the band is called let 3 and theyre a leftist band from rijeka, croatia. pro-women rights, pro-lgbtq rights, anti-catholic church, etc. as you can see, this song featuring men in makeup and dresses has made lots of conservative croats very angry.

2) croatia has gone through the same situation as in ukraine but in 90es, though without help of foreign countries. it’s no surprise that they chose to portray song about ridiculousness of war and destruction of it. its something very fresh in croatian history and minds of people. ive seen people saying its “making fun” of ukraine situation when its the very opposite thing. the entire band lived through war in croatia and knows what its like.

3) the song is very anti-war, and was not written for esc - its written as a piece of anti-war rock opera. thats why its performance is theatrical and flashy. its supposed to be performed in theatre.

4) meaning of the song:

- at first the song seems v nonsensical and silly, but its actually a really layered song with a strong anti-war, anti-fascist message.

- centerpiece of the song is tractor. thats bc belarus is a manufacturer of tractors AND a brand of tractor; and as well, last year, lukashenko gifted a tractor to putin for his birthday to ‘sew new future’. tractor in the song refers to belarus, so when you hear the lyrics “mom bought a tractor”, it refers to “russia bought belarus”. similarly, “armageddon nona” means “armageddon grandmother”, aka, soviet union.

- “mom loved a moron” is obviously about putin.

- Š is 25th letter of croatian alphabet and Č is 4th. together they make 29th letter - letter Z, the symbol of russian occupators.

- the guy holding the nukes has NJINLE written on his forehead, which in “šatrovački” reads as lenjin.

- theyre dressed as 4 bringers of armageddon - war, plague, death, and hunger.

p.s. if the singing sounded kinda wonky in the first semi-finals… thats bc the main singer caught a cold lmao.

anyway yes consider voting croatia in GF ;P

The “car community” claim that the sexual component is small. A Google search for “car porn” suggests otherwise. Of course adults can do

chipped

Man, this is such a perfect analogy. “Chipped”… Just damaged enough for it to show at times, but not nearly broken enough to warrant fixing. And so often does the chipped cup turn itself to show its undamaged side.

yesterday i was hiking with my dog and passed by a family with their 14 yo princess of darkness trotting behind them in very unsuitable clothes and uncomfortable shoes that clearly weren’t meant to get dirty on forest mud. oh the quintessential teenage experience of doing something in a way that is stupid and sucks because it’s important that it’s your own way 🫡

The experience of being a teenager, especially, is relentlessly being forced to do things by authority figures who have arbitrary power over you. As a result “Okay, I’ll do it, but I’ll do it in the least compliant way possible” is a persistent and entirely sympathetic element of being a teenager

Okay as someone who professionally works with kids, I’ll weigh on on this and say: the thing about defiance and “brattiness” is they are defense mechanisms for having no power in your life.

Kids and teens do not have power in their life. Even in the most ideal of circumstances. They can’t really make informed choices about voting or houses and especially in America, the entire social structure is hostile to letting them go where they want to go.

So OP is absolutely right and put it beautifully. “it’s important that it’s your own way.” I’ve seen preverbal babies force their shoes off their feet in response to a completely unrelated obligation because I can force them to take a nap but I can’t make them take a nap AND nicely keep their shoes on. It is arguably a pretty stupid defiance, but defiance isn’t about being smart.

It’s the scream of a person without power insisting if they have no choice but to do this, they will do it their way! And that’s more important than practicality. It’s more important than being reasonable.

I firmly believe that deep down adults aren’t less bratty or defiant than kids are- they’re just given more leeway and power so they’re more used to having control and use that to cope. The average 30-year-old would absolutely have a meltdown in the pasta aisle if they were regularly dragged to places they didn’t want to be by another adult who they were never allowed to be away from or choose where they were going besides very limited exceptions.

(also disclaimer that in using the term “bratty” I am by no means condemning this behavior. It’s born of a frustration that is completely understandable.)

a QT of a screen rant post saying the Mandalorian's helmet rules create a plot hole. the QT has a dialogue: "Hey, Mando?” “Yeah boss?” “Take that helmet for a sec?" “Sorry, can’t.” “Why?” “Religious reasons.” “But the other Mando hire never wears a helmet.” “...sigh. Listen, I’m Orthodox, he’s Reform, we observe differently.” “But you’re both Mandalorian?” “Yes, Jeff, we are.”ALT

So if my students finish a quiz/test early, I ask them to draw me stuff on the back (partly so those who need more time are less self-conscious about still having the test out, partly because fuck yeah, pictures), and it may be the single best decision of my career.

In the past couple of weeks, I’ve told these kids that (a) the Romans believed there were demons in their public toilets and (b) the word for “janitor” comes from “ianitor”, which means “(door) guard”.

So now I’m getting drawings of superhero janitors taking on toilet demons, and it’s so beautiful.

Aaaaand today a student showed me a video of himself lighting a fire in his toilet while chanting the conjugation of the word “to be”.

He said he wanted to recreate the ancient toilet demons, and I have concerns.

K… but why conjugations of to be?

My students kept forgetting how to conjugate esse, so I turned it into a rhythmic chant that I had them say over and over. The problem is that when you chant ANYTHING in Latin it sounds like you’re summoning a demon, which they decided was awesome, so uh. Now I’ll just be randomly walking through the hallway and hear voices chanting, “sum es est! sumus estis sunt!”

I’m 99% sure my colleagues think I’ve started a cult.

Keep doing what you’re doing. I’m sure everyone will turn out all the better for it.

“This is a tapestry I made myself! I just finished it!”

“…. this is…. big.”

“Eighty feet long, ten high, in forty panels! It was originally going to be sixty feet, but then the Thomas Malory Arthuriana got big and I had to put more stuff in.”

“… Malory published in the fifteenth century.”

“Do you have any idea how long it takes one person to embroider eight thousand square feet of tapestry?”

“You’ve had a lot of free time in the last eight hundred years, haven’t you?”

“Not once I took up embroidery as a hobby, no!”

“Want to see my stalagmite cultivation work?”
